Working on old guns I am constantly reshaping and modifying screwdrivers to properly fit screw heads. I had been using a machinist Vee block mounted in a mill vise with a carbide bur or stones to modify screwdriver blades. With a dividing head I could even modify Phillips and Allen bits. It was time consuming for sure.
Being a tool nut, I am always looking for a better, efficient and quicker way to accomplish these tool tasks or just better quality tools. Then I ran across this Screw-Saver portable machine on Ebay. I studied all the pictures and watched the videos of the Screw-Saver in action and all it could do. I never buy anything on the spur of the moment so I slept on it overnight and I ordered the complete Screw-Saver package the next day. I then ordered the recommended Makita Router as recommended by the Screw-Saver description in their literature. Then I waited for the packages to arrive at the shop.
On arrival I setup the unit and installed the Makita Router with the carbide bur per the excellent instructions and put it to the test. I was not disappointed! I spent the next hour and a half dressing all the broken slotted screwdrivers (about 25 screwdrivers) that I had in the broken tool box on the bench. Damn, I was impressed! I have not seen a machine that is small & portable that will grind screwdriver slotted blades to precise thicknesses anywhere before. The machine is top quality workmanship.
The ability to shape a custom screwdriver blade to fit an application on the work bench quickly is a real benefit to a gunsmith. Time is money as the saying goes. A few days later I had one of those backyard scope installed guns in the shop with stripped out Allen head screws in the rings. I was able to grind an oversized Allen bit to fit tightly in the stripped heads and removed them easily. Awesome machine!
Value: For the money and worth every penny, there is no other portable screwdriver shaping machine that is relatively simple to use, shapes screwdrivers & Allen precisely without burning the steel turning it blue and quickly on the market that I have found.
